How to Make Phonk: Memphis and Brazilian Phonk in FL Studio

Phonk splits into two big styles: dark Memphis phonk and fast, aggressive Brazilian phonk. Both are easy to start in FL Studio.

Memphis phonk

  • Tempo 130 to 145 BPM, half-time feel
  • Lo-fi, saturated drums and old drum machine snares
  • Dark piano or bell loop, lightly bit-crushed
  • Cowbell melody on top

Crypt Phonk gives you the melodic one-shots for this style.

Brazilian phonk

  • Tempo 125 to 135 BPM, straight funk groove
  • Hard-clipped kick and bass
  • Short, repeating vocal or synth stabs

Start with Favela Drive for Brazilian phonk sounds.

Mix tip

Phonk lives on distortion. Clip the master lightly and keep the low end mono. Our mixing plugins include a clipper and limiter built for it.
