How to Make Cloud Rap Beats (Dreamy Pads, Washed Melodies, Soft 808s)

Cloud rap is all about atmosphere. The beats feel hazy, floating and slightly out of focus, with dreamy melodies, big reverb and drums that sit back instead of punching you in the face. This guide walks you through building one from scratch.

1. Tempo and key

Cloud rap usually lives around 60 to 75 BPM (or 120 to 150 BPM with a half-time feel). Choose a key that sounds warm and a little melancholic. Major 7th and minor 9th chords work great because they already sound soft and open.

2. Start with washed, airy textures

The melody is the heart of a cloud rap beat. Instead of sharp plucks, reach for pads, airy keys, choirs and textures that already sound blurry. Play slow chords with long sustain and let notes overlap.

The CLOUD NINE - Cloud Rap One Shot Kit gives you 39 washed, dreamy, airy cloud rap textures, with the key or chord in every file name, so building a chord progression is quick.

3. Make it hazy

Once your chords are in, push them further into the clouds:

  • Reverb: long decay (3 to 8 seconds), wide, with the low end cut so it does not get muddy.
  • Low-pass filter: roll off some highs so the melody feels distant.
  • Pitch wobble: a slow vibrato or tape-style warble adds that old-memory feel.
  • Reverse swells: reverse a reverb tail and place it just before a chord change.

For huge tails without spending money, try TrapWin HALO, a free algorithmic reverb with decay up to 30 seconds and a FREEZE mode for infinite pads. Its DUCK control makes the reverb step back while the vocal is singing and bloom in the gaps, which is ideal for cloud rap.

4. Keep the drums soft

Cloud rap drums support the mood rather than leading it:

  • Use a rounder kick and a snare or clap with some room on it.
  • Program simple hi-hats at 1/8 with only a few rolls.
  • Lower the drum volume a little compared to a hard trap beat.
  • Send the snare to the same reverb as the melody so everything lives in one space.

Ambient and atmospheric drums work well here. The TrapWin Drum Kit Bundle includes every TrapWin drum kit, including MIDNIGHT ABYSS - Ambient Trap, plus 13 more kits (1,582 drums total).

5. Warm, clean 808s

A heavily distorted 808 can break the dreamy mood. Use a clean, deep sub 808 with a long tail and follow the root notes of your chords. Slides are fine, but keep them slow and smooth.

6. Arrange for space

Cloud rap beats breathe. Drop the drums out for 4 bars, let only the pad and a vocal chop play, then bring everything back. Automate the filter on your melody to open slowly over the first 8 bars. Small changes keep the loop interesting without breaking the vibe.

7. Mix tips

  • Keep the 808 and kick in mono, and let the pads and reverb go wide.
  • Cut low end from reverb returns.
  • Use gentle compression on the master; cloud rap does not need to be crushed.
