How to Make Dark UK Drill Melodies (Sliding Strings, Cold Brass)
Share
Drill melodies feel cold for a reason: minor keys, sliding strings and sparse, repeating motifs. Here is how to build one fast.
1. Pick the scale
Harmonic minor and Phrygian are the drill staples. The raised 7th in harmonic minor gives that tense, eastern pull; Phrygian's flat 2nd sounds instantly menacing.
2. Choose cold sounds
Strings, brass, choirs and bells with short release. One-shots with the key in the file name save time: drop them in a sampler and play. Cold Block and Cold Block Vol. 2 are built exactly for this.
3. Slides are the signature
Use portamento or pitch automation so notes glide into each other. Keep slides short and on the off-beats.
4. Leave space for the 808
Drill 808s slide too, so keep the melody above 200 Hz and cut low mids. Two or three notes repeated with small variations works better than a busy line.
5. Arrange in 8s
Strip the melody to one layer in the verse and add the counter-melody in the hook. Need drums? Grab the free TrapWin drum kit.
